I really really hope to get back to blogging soon! Right now with a nine day old, I am just too tired. I do well checking and or deleting my 400 emails I got while I was in the hospital.

This is gonna be a quickie. Rushing around like a chicken with my head cut off (now that’s a vision, huh) trying to get ready for tomorrow. Going in tomorrow morning for a c-section with baby number 3. We are so excited! My poor house is a total wreck and I cannot get the gumption up to really care right now. (was talking to my sister-in-law about that this morning, that we are both glad we do not have that urge to always live in an immaculate house, because at that point are you truly living or just cleaning and worried all the time)

Anyway, back to baby! So, I am really hoping to have a guest blogger on this next week some. I will totally understand though if he is unable to because of work and babies. I am talking about my hubby, Geek Adonis. He offered (because he is that awesome), to guest blog for me this week. I am afraid with new baby, hospital time, and recovery that I will not be blogging the rest of this week and possibly next week as well.

I found it absolutely amazing the many different ways you can make your own natural face wash at home.  The really cool part is there are quite a few different ones for different skin types as well.  I discovered that many of the ingredients from my kitchen would provide some simple and excellent ways for cleansing my face naturally.   I was so overwhelmed by the wealth of information, that I have not had the time to try it all, but I wanted to post some of my findings.

Here are a few tips before we get started:

* Natural skin care cleanser recipes do not typically include foaming agents. Just because a cleanser doesn’t foam, does not mean it isn’t working! Surfactants are added to cleansers for the rich lather we all have come accustomed to. However, they can be really harsh on skin. If you’ve ever used a high end cleanser with natural ingredients you’ll notice they do not lather very much. So skip the lather and you’ll still have clean, supple healthy skin!

* Most ingredients can be found in your cupboard, online or at a local health food store and are relatively cheap. Opt to buy powders, extracts and oils instead of actual fruit and veggies. Their shelf life is much longer and the cost is kept down.

* You can make some of these washes ahead if you store them properly. Read ingredient labels for shelf life. Even better, make just before you cleanse. Some of the simple recipes below only take less than a minute or two to mix up.

* When using essential oils in your blends, please read all the cautions. If used improperly, some oils can be dangerous. (Please feel free to message me about some oils and I can email you some info on them. I sell essential oils by Young Living.)

* Some of the healthiest oils for external skin care use include: almond oil, avocado oil, castor oil, coconut oil, hemp seed oil, jojoba oil, olive oil (virgin or extra virgin is best), rosehip seed oil , shea butter, and walnut oil.

First off, I thought I would put together a small skin care regimen. This I think would work for every skin type, but not every skin type would need to use all of the steps; as well as you wouldn’t need to do all of them everyday.

Dead Skin Exfoliate

Cotton Balls

Stir together 1/2 cup cold milk and 1/2 tsp. of salt. Soak a cotton ball and gently dab all over your face. After the milk dries in 2 to 3 minutes, dip a cotton ball again in the mixture and rub lightly in a circular motion and wash off with water. Milk removes dirt from deep pores and salt exfoliates dead skin resulting in instant brightness.

Honey Citrus Glow

Orange Juice
Fuller’s Earth (to absorb impurities) available here or at most health food stores.

Mix a tablespoon of honey and fuller’s earth with a few drops of orange juice and apply it liberally over your face. Rinse it off after a minute for an instant glow from the orange juice. Also, apply a few drops of plain orange juice on your forehead and cheeks and wash it off for a natural shine.

Oatmeal Mask

Lemon Juice

Take 1 tbsp. of instant oatmeal and add 1 tsp. of honey and lemon juice to make a loose paste. Apply it all over forehead, face and neck. When it begins to dry, rub using brisk, firm movement to remove dead cells and stimulate the skin. Wash it off with lukewarm water.

Dry Skin Exfoliate

Blend 1/2 tsp. of chickpea powder along with a pinch of turmeric and honey. Blend this well with milk apply on your face. Massage in circular motion and wash away. The chickpea powder exfoliates your skin and honey moisturizes.

Oily Skin Exfoliate

Blend 1/2 tsp. of chickpea powder along with a pinch of turmeric and honey. Blend this well with yogurt and apply on your face. Massage in circular motion and wash away. The chickpea powder exfoliates your skin and honey moisturizes.

Coconut Lavender Cleanser

3 Tsp coconut oil
1 Tsp olive oil
1 Tsp glycerin
2 tsp water
2-3 drops Lavender oil

Melt all ingredients (except the lavender oil) together in a double boiler. When melted, remove from heat and beat with a whisk for 5 minutes. Once cooled add the lavender oil. Transfer to jar or container for use and storage.

Quick side note – Coconut oil can be used for so many things. I have been using it for a couple of years now, once you start using it and realize the awesome redeeming qualities you will want to buy it by the gallon like I do. I use it for cooking, face moisturizer, all over body moisturizer, add it to my smoothies, and its an excellent anti-bacterial mouthwash. It is also great as a base massage oil, just add a few drops of any essential oil to it and your ready to go.

Every year God gives us some of the best natural free compost/mulch you can find. I like to call it nature’s confetti because it falls ever year around this time and lands randomly across the landscape. Leaves are awesome compost and mulch. Some people even gather it for you and put it on their sidewalk. All, you have to do is grab it before the trashman does. Leaf litter is nature’s best fertilizer! Think of the forest. Your plants will thank you.

Have you ever considered how many chemicals you use in just one day? I personally think women use more than anyone. I have decided to challenge myself into using less and less harmful chemicals in my house, starting today. I have over the years done little things here and there, but never really stuck to much of anything. I have decided to start with a regular day (not a typical day though, this is what I might want to get done if I was supermom) and make a list of different tasks that I do. With many of my tasks there are different chemicals involved. For example:

1. Wash face – face wash
2. Brush teeth – toothpaste
3. Take a shower – shampoo, conditioner, shower gel/ soap, shaving cream
4. After shower –
*Apply deodorant
*Apply make-up (Well, I do this on days I actually leave the house)
*Apply face lotion & body lotion
5. Get the kids up – change diapers & use wet wipes
6. Start a load of laundry – laundry detergent and dryer sheets (stain remover)
7. Make breakfast – cooking oils
8. Wash dishes – dish detergent
9. Clean house –
*clean bathroom – shower/tile cleaner, toilet cleaner
*mop floors – wood floor cleaner, regular floor cleaner
*clean rugs and couch – upholstery & rug cleaner
*dust furniture – pledge
*wash windows – window cleaner
10. Work in the garden – pesticides & herbicides
11. Fix dinner – cookware, aerosol cooking sprays

I realize that I have not listed everything and as I think of things, then I will try and add them to the list. My plan is to each week research the products we use in and around our house that are laden with chemicals and replace them with healthier and less harmful products. As I research each number in my list, I will post my findings and use these products and tell you my results. I challenge myself and you to join me in making a healthier and fresher home for you and your family.
