I have been praying lately and asking God to give me the passion to really get into his word. So, I have been searching for different methods to read through the bible. I really like the “90 Day Challenge”, and want to do that when it comes back around. I have also been wanting to do the, “The Power of a Praying Wife”, with Stormie Omartian. There are a few other methods I still want to try and other studies I want to do. So, I thought I would just start at one and as the months and years go by share them with you and we can study and grow in God’s word together. So, please join me for Blogging Through the Gospels, a 14-week read and study of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John beginning Monday, April 4, and continuing through Sunday, July 10. Then, on Monday of July 11th, I will be starting the 90 day challenge and try reading the bible in 90 days. As that day draws nearer I will share more of what that entails or you can go to “Mom’s Tool Box” and begin the 90 day challenge with me.
Today’s Reading – Matthew Chapter 6
Scripture – scripture that I feel God is using to speak to me in today’s reading.
Matthew 6:7 “And, when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard for their many words”.
Observation
God knows what your going to say before you say it. God wants us to come to him with honesty and sincerity, not shallow repetitions.
Application
I know many times in the past I would come to God in prayer being nervous or without clear thought. I now start my prayers with asking God to help me clear my mind as I come to him in prayer. In my nervousness I think I did babble on and sometimes repeat things. Not to say that it is wrong to come to God many times with the same request – it is good to be persistent in your prayer. I think my problem was that I would come to God not prepared or ready so I would ask in prayer one thing and then ask the same thing just slightly rephrased like I was talking to a child and trying to explain things in different ways hoping that he would understand. Like I said earlier, God knows what your are going to say before you say it. So now before I come to God I try to clear my thoughts of everything other than what I need to pray to him about and keep it simple and straightforward.
I know there are times of urgent need that it may be hard to think clearly or your in a hair pulling situation with your kids and simple and straightforward are very far from your mind. This may be the time to pray for peace of mind, body, and heart the most. You realize in me saying this I am talking about myself right? Like I said, I TRY to clear my thoughts. I think this is why it is very important to start your day if you can before your kids wake up and spend some time alone with God and his word. (Matthew 6:6-But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen.) When I do this I always have a better clearer day.
If you have a hard time with prayer right now on finding what to say, remember God’s pattern for prayer. (Matthew 6:9 -13)
1. Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. This is a statement of praise and a commitment to hallow, or honor, God’s holy name. So praise him in prayer.
2. Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. This is a reference to God’s spiritual reign and praying that God’s perfect purpose will be accomplished in this world and in our lives. So, pray for his work and will in this world.
3.Give us today our daily bread. We are acknowledging that God is our sustainer and provider. So, pray for your daily needs.
4.Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. Forgive what is owed, whatever it may be. And, forgive what is owed us. So, pray to be forgiven and for help to forgive others.
5.And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. God does not lead us into temptation, but sometimes allows us to be tested by them. We should pray to be delivered from the trying times. So, pray for help in our daily struggles.
Prayer
Lord God, thank you for your word and the time in your word this morning. Thank you for reminding me that getting up and starting my day with you is one of the most important things that I can do for me and my family. Help me with remembering not to do things in front of men, to do things for the glory of you. Please help me to remember that prayer does not need to be flowery and complicated, but simple. Please guide me in my prayers with you. This time with you it is important for me to talk & listen.
I love you Lord. Amen
